For the past seven years, the empty lot that Kroger was said to be built on 5270 Airline Road in 2016 has sat empty. Residents and town officials have patiently waited for updates, and it was announced in June that they would finally begin construction on the new Kroger. The store is expected to be completed by the summer of 2024. Despite some delays and uncertainties, Kroger’s purchase of the site has sparked significant development in the area. Clymesa Applewhite, a teacher at Arlington High School, said, “The location is really good, and it’s right beside the hospital and residential buildings.” This will be Arlington’s second Kroger location, and Kroger hasn’t announced if the existing Kroger will stay open. The store will be 103,640 square feet and cost about $22.3 million. Abby Rose Wells, a customer of Kroger, said, “I’m so excited to come home from college and go get some snacks with all the new options.” The new Kroger will be surrounded by various commercial projects and feature a dual drive-thru pharmacy, Starbucks, a click list area, and nine fuel pumps.
