Marsha Wilson
Switching from Kindergarten to Third Grade may seem daunting for some teachers, but for new Donelson Elementary teacher Marsha Wilson, she says she is ready for the challenge this year.
Throughout her youth, she knew she wanted to become a teacher, “It was one of those gut feelings”, she said. However, as she was attending high school, she found she had a love for chemistry and decided to pursue a career in pharmacy. Mrs. Wilson attended Union University in Jackson, after receiving scholarships. While attending college for pre-pharmacy school, she discovered that it wasn’t for her. As soon as she graduated college, she became a substitute teacher to kick-start her teaching career.
She truly wants the best for her kids saying, “I want to make sure that my children that are on a lower level are able to succeed and exceed where they’re supposed to be.” She has been teaching for 11 years. Though she taught kindergarten for her first ten years, she’s up for teaching kids of higher grade levels. She challenges the kids at their own personal levels because she knows she has a varied group of learners.
“If you truly want to be a teacher it’s a job you should be passionate about if anything. There’s a place for everybody in education.”
She wants to show her peers that she can be a good leader and a good fit for the school. For the past 8 years, Mrs. Wilson has been a Teacher Leader Mentor for other new teachers. It’s a goal for her to be able to reach that position at Donelson. “What we teach children to learn is not as effective as what we teach them to love,” quoting something that truly speaks to her. She believes if she can teach them to love coming to school and love learning, it’ll have a greater impact than them being forced to have to learn something.
Before working at Donelson, Mrs. Wilson worked for Shelby County Schools at Shelby Oaks Elementary.
