Sheridan Vasquez
Exciting. Inspiring. Welcoming. Those are the first three words that came to mind when I entered Mrs. Vasquez’s classroom. Mrs. Vasquez is a new third-grade teacher to Arlington Elementary School who is already getting comfortable with her new class. “They want to learn the dances, they want to sing, they want to work with their partners, my class is great.”
Though it has only been her second week teaching, she has already begun connecting with her students through her unique whole brain teaching style. With her recent arrival to the Arlington Community, she also brought along her unique teaching style. “I do a whole brain teaching, which is including hand motions and songs and chants into things. So it makes it fun and so that they’re not bored.” According to the Journal of Instruction, Whole Brain Teaching has had great results in children’s learning and behavior.
Graduating from the University of Memphis, Mrs. Vasquez hoped to make a change in the world. She had a few hiccups along the way, but, with enough time, she found her calling. “I started in nursing, but it wasn’t my jam. And then teaching just kind of became a love of mine, just seeing that lightbulb moment go off in students.” This love of the “lightbulb moment” drives her to make sure each student is accounted for in her lectures.
About Mrs. Vasquez, she is an avid bookworm and animal lover. “I do not have any children except for my Corgi Gump.” Additionally, she mentioned that her favorite kind of food is Thai food and her favorite carnival ride is the ferris wheel. Along the year, she has many plans to decorate her classroom for holidays and other occasions. “I’m big holiday person. I love decorating. I’m excited for spooky season. I’ll have ghosts and all of that.“
