On March 29, 2024, a tragic accident became the reason of fatality for six construction workers and a number of others who were driving across the bridge.
The Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge was rammed into by a large container ship that lost power; the bridge snapped and plunged quickly into the river below.
The ship was 985-feet long and struck the 1.6-mile bridges supports at 8 knots, approximately 9mph. The breaking of the bridge caused it to collapse within seconds.
There was eight construction workers on the bridge at the time and only two were rescued. The other six were presumed dead. It has also been reported that two other civilians were in a red pickup truck, also tragically found dead.
