California’s fires

What has been happening? Why did these fires start?
California’s fires

California has been experiencing a series of devastating wildfires which have become a recurring and increasingly severe problem in recent years. These fires have had a profound impact on the environment, communities, and society as a whole.

One of the primary causes of the California fires is the state’s unique climate and its geography. California has very hot and dry summers and mild, wet winters which create these ideal conditions for wildfires. Climate change has affected this dramatically by increasing temperatures and reducing precipitation leading to dried vegetation that ignites more easily.

These fires have taken over parts of California starting on January 7th, 2025. The affected areas include the Los Angeles metropolitan area and San Diego County. The wildfires burned over 57,000 areas of land in total. The fires have killed at least 29 people and caused more than 200,000 to evacuate. More than 18,000 homes have been destroyed and memories have been burned. California is getting a funding package including $2.5 billion for the use by the state and local agencies to recover these affected areas.

The fires continued on for around a month, but as of recently, it was reported that they are finally contained. Although, Californians still aren’t safe. These fires were the deadliest fires California has ever witnessed. Around 900 firefighters have contributed to helping with these fires. They have been working day and night trying to remove the heat and stop these fires.

Breleigh Bunker, a senior at Arlington High School, says, “These fires have become worse by the day, until recently. It is so sad to see everyone lose their homes and some lose their family members. I am hoping that California gets better as soon they possible.”

Seeing these fires on the news everyday and hearing about it from friends and family, it is so hard to imagine being in their situation. I can’t imagine what families are going through and what they have experienced. I am glad they have finally contained the fires and have been given money to help restore. These fires have affected California is terrible ways and have played a role in people’s lives.
