Crystal Uhiren is the Arlington High School FCCLA Advisor and has been since the club was brought to Arlington by her in 2005. FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leader of America and focuses on community service and leadership skills. FCCLA encourages students all over the nation to work together as a community to better themselves and the people around them. Not only does the club teach young and prospective high school students essential life skills, but also allows them to use what they know and learn to compete at the district, state, and national level.
The club is currently working on the “Hungry to Give Back” project, a food drive for the Arlington Little Free Pantry. “The pantry is being heavily utilized in Arlington so we know there is a need for it to remain stocked. We hope to provide food and reduce hunger in the Arlington community by contributing various food products to the pantry,” Uhiren replied when asked what she hoped the Town of Arlington would gain from this project.
The club started the project by simulating the hunger experience in one of their club meetings. They based their meeting and project off the statistic that one in six children experiences hunger in America every year. At the meeting, where food was provided, one out of every six members was randomly chosen to experience the hunger experience by not getting to eat the provided food. After the hunger experience, the club did a 60 second challenge to raise money for the Arlington Little Free Pantry.
FCCLA is also partnering with DECA, HOSA, and Arlington Community Schools to collect food and raise money for the pantry. If you would like to donate food to any of these clubs, feel free to donate food to the front office of Arlington High School or bring it directly to the pantry. The Little Free Pantry is located at the Living Word Lutheran Church at 6108 Chester St, Arlington TN 38002. It is located in the parking lot behind the church.
