How many people can say they’ve won the Memphis Business Journal: Girls Who Mean Business award, and receive an opportunity to do “speed network” with 40 of the most powerful women in Memphis? Lauren Dempsey, senior student at Arlington High School, can say it. Only one student was chosen from each high school in Shelby County to receive the award, and Lauren Dempsey was chosen at Arlington High. Her Social Sciences teacher, Mrs. Uhiren, nominated Lauren earlier this year for her leadership in the classroom. She found out in February she won. When asked how she felt winning this award, Lauren replied, “It was such an honor to win and a really cool experience to be recognized by Mayor Strickland at the event.” In April, an award ceremony will be held and Lauren and the other nominees will receive their official award.
