Arlington High School welcomes new head girls basketball coach, Sherri Smith, for the 23-24 school year. Coach Smith works alongside her husband, Anthony Smith, who is the head coach for the boys basketball team. They’ve both described how much they love working together and make a great coaching duo. The Smiths, both being new to Arlington High School, are very enthusiastic about the basketball program and working together to push both teams to their highest potential.
The couple, both being teachers, coaches, and parents, have a lot to balance at once, but as Coach Sherri Smith says, “I love what I do, so I make sure that I balance all three things well, and everything is taken care of for my players, students, and children.” Coach Smith has a lot of passion and love for all of these areas in her life and portrays herself as a very hardworking and dedicated woman by describing the initiative she has to get everything done and how proud she is of all these different aspects of her life.
Coach Smith is joining us from Fayette County and is not only a basketball coach, but also teaches 9th grade lifetime wellness. Coach Smith chose to come to Arlington because she “likes the culture out here,” and she enjoys “the support the community gives.” She has been teaching for 17 years and coaching for 7 years. Coach Smith is excited to get a fresh start with the Arlington girls basketball program and work to develop it from the ground up.
Both coaches describe how they got into coaching, although their reasons are very different. Coach Anthony started coaching due to a coach he had when he was in high school. He describes him as “someone who made a difference in his life.” He explains how much one coach can change your life and he wanted to be that person to someone. Coach Anthony looks forward to changing the lives of his players, on and off the court. Coach Sherri chose to go into coaching because when she was younger, her aunt always said how she could see her being a coach/teacher one day. She never could see herself coaching until her husband pushed her towards it and she decided to try it.
