This past weekend, there were many road in Memphis, Tennessee that were completely flooded. Many trees and debris were floating all over the city. Many cars were submerged, and the rain caused much damage throughout the city. The Shelby County Sherrif’s office evacuated three people from their homes and cleared six fallen trees.
The rainfall set a record for Memphis at 5.47 inches. This is the most rainfall Memphis has seen since 1872.
Since all of downtown was flooded because of how bad the storms were, all high school proms were canceled. Many students were upset with this outcome because most schools canceled 2 hours before prom was supposed to start. The schools that cancelled Saturday night were Bartlett High School, Houston High School, Lausanne, Christian Brothers High School, and MUS.
An Arlington High School student attending Houston High School’s prom, Lily Douglas, says, “It was upsetting not being able to go to the dance, but my friends and I made the most of it and still had fun.”
Many of these schools are planning on rescheduling. However, it will be difficult for these schools to reschedule because of conflict with other proms coming up for schools in the area.
The storms and rainfall in Memphis had a really big impact on the community. Memphis is now recovering from the floods, as well as trying to reschedule proms for the high school students.
