Several schools in the southern United States do not have school on April 18, 2025, because of Good Friday. Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday. It is a day of reflection and prayer and often marked by church services and other observances. Good Friday is specifically remembered as the day Jesus was crucified and died on the cross. Christians believe that Jesus’s death on the cross was a sacrifice for the sins made by humans, offering salvation and eternal life.
Why is it called Good Friday? Why do Christians call the day that Jesus was crucified Good Friday?
Jesus had all the flesh of his back ripped off. His face was beaten so bad that he did not even look like a human being. He was stripped naked in front of human people. He was accused of saying and doing things that he did not even do. Matthew 27:30 says, “And they spit on him and grabbed the stick and struck him on the head with it.” He then carried a wooden cross up a hill that weighed over 300 pounds and got nailed to it. He is pinned to it by nails, and his body weight is sagging through the nails at this point in time. It continued to rip holes deeper and deeper into his skin and people call that Good Friday.
So, why do Christians still call it “GOOD” Friday?
The reason they call it Good Friday is because it is a good day for people. Good Friday is called Good Friday because it is the day that people have a chance to be set free from the things that keep people bound and separated from God, our sin. For the first time in any point in history, any human being can accept this free gift called friendship with the God of the universe and He offers them a clean slate from the sins and rebellion that they have done against God. Good Friday is a celebration of freedom from spiritual and physical death.
