My Media Arts journey began Freshman year in Mr. Ashbee’s Intro to Film & Video Honors class. Being new to Arlington, I was nervous going into High School, but through Mr. Ashbee’s class, I met so many people and felt comfortable at school. Freshman year I learned new skills like the rule of thirds, how to set up a tripod, how to edit a video, and how to analyze and appreciate a movie.
Fast forward to Junior year, I took Digital Journalism. I didn’t know what to expect going in to the class but I was pleasantly surprised. Being in Mrs. Bateman’s third period Digital Journalism class the past two years has taught me so many new skills and taught me so much about myself. First off, I learned how to write news stories. I learned how to think in depthly and creatively about what is going on around me and how to turn that into an interesting story. Secondly, I learned how to make a VOSOT. Before taking Mrs. Bateman’s class, I never even knew what a VOSOT was. Lastly, I learned about photography. This is my favorite thing I learned in Digital Journalism and definitely my biggest takeaway. I learned how to use a camera, how to edit pictures, how to frame shots, and about lighting. I discovered that photography is actually so fun to me and it’s something that I really enjoy. While I’m not planning to pursue a career in photography, I can definitely see myself doing it further down the road on the side as a hobby.
Overall, I have been significantly impacted by the Media Arts department at AHS, especially Mrs. Bateman. This class has taught me so much and helped me to branch out of my comfort zone. I’m thankful for my time being a part of this program. Bye!!
