Graphic Media at AHS

Madelyn Budlong, Journalists

Recently I interviewed art teacher, Mrs. Wilson. I asked her what prompted her to become a graphic designer, here are some things she said. “I became a graphic designer because I could. I loved art and needed a way to earn a living.” Instead of becoming a regular artist, I asked why she chose Graphic Media. She said, “When I started that was a sure way to earn a living. Everyone in graphics got a job, either in production, design, or illustration.” I asked her if she could describe Graphic Media in a few words, what would they be? “Thoughts produced on paper and screen.” I wanted to know what advise she would give students that want to major in graphics. she told me, “Work on paper first- develop your ideas. Anyone can work on a computer. Ideas and creativity are what matters. Learn how print is produced, learn about digital production. Learn how to make what you want to make.” Some last few things I asked are, what are some ways that graphic media has changed throughout the years. She replied saying, “Hot type, wooden type, rub off letters, photo type setting.  Now computers. We made everything by hand. Bigger equipment then…more compact now and portable.” Lastly I asked what are some things that are more difficult than others in Graphic Media? She said, “Keeping up with technology and keeping up with color trends and other aspects in that field.”
