Cheerleading at Arlington High school is very highly admired yet incredibly demanding sport. From their multiple awards, to their world titles, these ladies have done it all. Among the girls, one particular cheerleader stands out. Senior, Ragan Strong was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes in 2017 during her first year of competitive cheer. However, she did not let this hold her back.
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas doesn’t produce any or very little insulin. Medication is needed to sustain a healthy lifestyle. With this, it’s important that she checks her blood sugar throughout the day and throughout her practices.
With an app on her phone, Ragan is able to keep up with her blood sugar levels. This allows her to be aware of where they are so she can get the insulin when she needs it.
“Having this condition while also still cheering has shown its fair share of obstacles. Thankfully, I have supporting family and teammates. I also want to be an advocate for other people struggling with Diabetes,” says Strong.
Ragan has been able to compete in many competitions, cheer at football games, and even bring home a world title, all while pushing through the difficulties that come along with her condition. Even though there are many challenges, Ragan continues to pursue the sport she loves and never gives up.
“I believe doing what you love is more than just giving up on it because you got something that went wrong in your life” – Ragan Strong
The Arlington Tiger Cheer team will continue to practice and prepare for the next few months leading up to their competitions. They will compete in a regional and state competition before taking it to the national and international level in Orlando, Florida. Ragan will continue to cheer along her fellow teammates for her Senior year, and hopefully be able to bring home the coveted white championship jackets.
