Homecoming court is a tradition that has been around for many years and makes a return for the 2023-2024 school year.
Each year, a select number of students are nominated to participate in homecoming court. This year, AHS has 2 freshman, 3 sophomores, 4 juniors, and 13 seniors. There are 6 senior boys and 7 senior girls. Mrs. Sarah Kelley has been in charge of homecoming court at Arlington High School since 2012. The rules are that only seniors vote, and the boy and girl who receive the most votes will be crowned homecoming king and queen. Before Mrs. Kelley was in charge, there was a first runner up, second runner up, etc. Mrs. Kelley says she “feels this was unfair and just made students feel bad about themselves, knowing they came in last.” Changing this rule was one big move she made to improve homecoming court.
A senior on court, Chloe Craft, shared that while feeling prepared, already having her dress and other important factors of the big night worked out, she is still pretty nervous. She hopes to look confident and present herself well, rather than falling and embarrassing herself.
Chloe is excited to be running alongside her boyfriend, Slade Williams. She chose to run “in order to add to all her fun senior-year memories.”
Jack Tidwell, the sole freshman elected, feels honored to have been elected without even running. He is slightly nervous for the big night and describes his excitement and honor to be on court. Jack adds, “I am glad that everyone thinks of me like that.” His only downside of the nomination is that he wishes he could have ran as an upperclassman, rather than a freshman, since students are only allowed on court one year.
Homecoming court will begin before kickoff Friday, September 29th. Homecoming king will be announced before kickoff, and queen will be announced at halftime.
