The now second-year, school-affiliated, girls’ lacrosse team is now halfway through their season. They have been improving with the addition of assistant coach Caleb Hilliard and many sophomores who joined this year to build more depth to this team.

This season, they have recorded two wins and nine losses. That is a better record than last year, as the girls won one game. Also, this season, Isabella “Isa” Cerezo broke a program record for most saves in a half with fifteen against St. Georges. With another year before her senior season, she gives the Tigers a strong foundation in goal to build their defense around, and she is only going to get better with time.

“Our whole game plan starts with our setup at the back, and our defense has really become our strong suit. We can go toe to toe with some of the best teams in the county. We started running a new defensive strategy, and the girls have picked it up well. Sam Smith, Bailey Rye, Lainey Fearnley, Maddie Wiseman, and Alayna Heitner have truly stepped up this season and led the defensive charge.”

Defense has been the key highlight of the Tigers this year, but the offense has been putting on a show with Lillian Snell. The midfielder has 17 goals over these past 11 games, this brings her average to about 1.54 goals per game.  The sophomore started playing lacrosse her Freshmen year and has found a stating role in season becoming a key player for the Tigers. Alongside her is Brooke Smith, a senior, who is leading the attack on offense recording eight goals for the season. She leads by example as a captain and is integral in the Tigers’ attack and their ride.

“Overall, our record does not reflect how much we have improved from the fall until now. The team is miles ahead of where we started, and I am very optimistic about the rest of the season. We are a relatively new program, and it takes time to build a team that can challenge for the postseason.” Hilliard said.

This season has been rocky with the new coaching staff and many players in their first year, but the team has been able to adjust and find its footing for the end of the season. The Tigers play at Collierville next Tuesday, and host White Station for senior night, Thursday.
