Karson Yarbro and Hannah Russell

The new soccer coach at Arlington High School, Duncan Nicol, has had many hardships and rewarding moments with his team throughout the year. Coach Duncan works as a professor at Union University, has two kids, and also coaches at AHS. He worked the majority of last year as the head coach of the boys team and assistant coach of the girls team. The change from being only the head coach of the boys team to the head coach of the girls team also is very different coach Duncan stated. “Transitioning from being the head of the boys team to the head of the girls team has been very different. It opens up a whole new meaning to being a coach.” He talks about how being a coach for the girls not only about coaching soccer but also being a therapist for them and helping them through their tougher times. Duncan has been playing soccer for the majority of his life. He has played not only high school soccer but he also was on a club team. He stated that his club team went undefeated in their season but they weren’t allowed to move up from their age group. Coach Duncan has not only learned how to coach girls but he has also had to learn many new things like how to balance family life and work life. He says that it has been difficult to adjust to the new changes that fell into his lap after this last season. He and his wife spent lots of time discussing his new role before he finally decided to accept it. We decided to ask a couple of players how they felt about Coach Duncan and how they thought that he improved the team. Kendal Mills a senior on the Varsity team states that, “ Coach Duncan has brought a very positive and welcoming environment to the team.” In the end, Coach Duncan talks about some advice that he would give to others when trying to balance multiple things at once. “I make a to do list and whatever doesn’t get done on that list gets added to the top of the list tomorrow.”
